Careers Education, Information Advice and Guidance at Biddick Academy.
Connexions Support for all students
A message from our Personal Advisor, Melanie Mackie
Working for Connexions Sunderland, my role as a Personal Adviser is to provide impartial information, advice and guidance to young people regarding their career aspirations. This provides students the opportunity to discuss their options for local 6th forms, colleges, subject choices and apprenticeship to help them achieve their full potential.
During year 11, every student will be offered a half-hour Careers Guidance interview to discuss their interests, ambitions and the options open to them. Following this interview they will be given a written summary with relevant information and any actions required. I also provide careers advice and guidance to all other year groups in Biddick Academy and am often in school.
There is also a wealth of information on our website www.connexions-tw.co.uk, including an apprenticeship vacancy section.
If you need advice you can call into the Washington Connexions Office at the Galleries. We are open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 1-5pm or contact me:

Biddick Academy endeavours to follow best practice guidance from the careers profession, from expert bodies such as Ofsted and from other Government departments. In the Academic year 2016-2017, the Academy is working towards the Inspiring IAG Quality Award in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG); an award that meets the Quality in Careers Standards. We are delighted to have been assessed as competent at Stage 1 of the programme and are currently working towards Stage 2 of the Award during this academic year.
Effective CEIAG within Biddick Academy ensures that the academy is:
Committed to good CEIAG provision. In this respect we do adhere to the Inspiring IAG Code of Practice. Please click the link to the right
people to consider all options, so that they are able to select the best way forward for their interests, motivations, learning styles, abilities and aspirations.
Our taught CEIAG curriculum is linked to the CDI framework for framework for careers, employability and enterprise education 7-19 and our programme is taught around three key aims:
Specific careers education lessons are taught within a structured programme through our Tutorial provision and prepare students throughout year 7-11 for the next stage of your life after Biddick!
In Biddick, we have a range of resources to support both Careers Education and to guide our students through some of the difficult decisions they have to make regarding their future. We offer Careers Education, and information, advice and guidance through our tutorial programme throughout the five years your child is at Biddick Academy, We support this learning through invitations to guest speakers from Colleges, Universities and Employers to speak at assemblies and tutorial sessions, as well as the Connexions support Melanie provides above. We participate in a range of external activities including the large Careers Convention held annually at the Arena in Newcastle, The Work Discovery Week organised by Sunderland Local Authority and Sunderland Football Club. We also hold our own Careers Fair in January of each year, inviting local Post 16 providers, large and small businesses and the local university network.
We have excellent links with many of the post 16 providers in the North East. Some of these include:
We also currently work with representatives from each of the local universities. Sunderland College offer additional unbiased advice, support and guidance.
There are a number of resources available specifically in school and / or web based which can support you and your child in careers education, information, advice and guidance.
In addition to the support we receive from Melanie at Connexions, we use an on-line software system to help and support our students in their career choices. This is available within school, and as it is web-based, could be used by you and your child at home. Your child should have been provided with log-in details from their tutorial teacher. If not, please contact the Academy and we can help.

We also offer a range of other activities within the Academy to support your child’s journey into the world of work. We provide students with Mock interview, where a range of employers will interview your child and provide feedback on their performance. Each year, we collapse our academic timetable for one week to support curriculum enrichment which includes topics on the world of work. We have an extensive resource in our library of prospectus for universities and colleges and have recently created a ‘Careers and Advice’ room where we intend to provide further careers and guidance within a specific area of school. During year 9, your child will choose their ‘options’ in terms of the GCSE subjects they will study in year 10 and year 11. We recognise that this is a big decision and therefore you and your child will be provided with support and guidance. This includes information sessions on the curriculum and an ‘options’ evening where you and your child can speak to teaching staff. We also offer the opportunity for every child, together with their parents / carers to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership to discuss their option choices personally. We regularly have requests from employers offering work / apprenticeship opportunities for our students. We have representatives from both Connexions and Sunderland College supporting us at our Options evenings and at Parent’s nights from year 9 onwards.
We currently provide an opportunity for every year 10 student to participate in a one week work experience. Our students are provided with guidance to organise their own placement with support from their head of year, form tutor, and through tutorial sessions.
